When people hear the words American and bull together, they tend to think of the American pit bull terrier. However, there are dogs that are called the American Bullies that aren't pit bulls, and are available for people to buy, show, or breed. 

American Bully vs. Pit Bull

It can be easy to confuse the two, just because of the name, but there are some distinct differences, even if they do share some common genetics. Pit bulls are part of the foundation of the bully breed, but there are plenty of other bulldog breeds mixed in, and the AKC recognizes them as a different and separate breed. When you are looking at the American Bully, you can see the genetics of the other bulldogs mixed into the breed. When it comes to visual differences, the Bully is shorter than the pit, and is also broader across the chest. They are bred to be muscular dogs, and it is quite obvious when you look at their chest. If the American Bully were humans, they would be powerlifters, with all those muscles. Their heads are also bigger and broader than pits are as well.

Temperament

The Bully should be a very friendly, happy dog. Part of their foundation stock include the French and English bulldogs, both of which tend to be very friendly and happy dogs. As a breed, Bullies aren't aggressive, but it is a good idea to make sure that the puppies are well-socialized with humans and other dogs. They also tend to be very good family dogs because they are very devoted and loyal. They should bond to your family, but even within that bond, they may choose just one person to be their particular person. If you are looking for a lapdog or a dog that will be more than happy to lay around with you, the Bully may not be the best option for you. They are actually pretty active dogs and are going to want to get out there and do things. You will want to make sure that they have plenty of play time every day, even if it's something as simple as tug of war with a rope toy in your front room.
